The 4th International Whale Shark Conference (IWSC), hosted by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment and its partners Maersk Oil Qatar and Qatar Whale Shark Research Project, kicked off in Doha on Monday.
Sheikh Dr Faleh bin Nasser al Thani, assistant undersecretary of Agricultural Affairs and Fish Resources, inaugurated the three-day event held under the patronage of Minister of Municipality and Environment HE Mohammed bin Abdullah al Rumaihi.
Faleh lauded the attention given to the Qatari environment under the leadership of the Emir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani.
He hoped the conference will achieve the desired objectives through the exchange of information and panel discussions.
He thanked Maersk Oil Qatar for its efforts in supporting environment projects in order to safeguard the environment and conserve biological diversity.
IWSC, aimed at promoting international cooperation in the field of preservation of the whale shark, brings together 100 participants, including 75 scientists from 28 countries.
It includes workshops during which participants will submit summaries and presentations designed to share knowledge and explore measures that contribute to the protection of whale sharks.
The emphasis will be on providing a forum for sharing international experience and expertise, setting research and conservation priorities, promoting international collaboration and summarising the status of knowledge on whale sharks.
