MADTalks- Making A Difference, a group of Filipino financial literacy advocates, recently organised a four-day event featuring talks on financial literacy. The talks were held under the auspices of Philippine Business Council in Qatar (PBC).
The talk series brought to Qatar a panel of expert speakers from Philippine-based First Metro Securities to speak about the importance of building a saving and investing habits among Filipinos. It was the first financial literacy roadshow series held outside the Philippines by First Metrosec, a member of the Metrobank Group of Companies in the Philippines.
The guest speakers included Andro Leo Beltran, Vanessa Galvez and Philippine Stocks Exchange Educator Aaron Say.
The first talk in the series by First Metrosec was held at the Philippine School Doha (PSD). Around 284 senior high school students of PSD took part in the informative session dubbed as"Financial Literacy for Teens".
Commenting on the event, PSD Principal Dr Alexander Acosta extended his appreciation to MADTalks and First Metro Securities for arranging an interactive and fun-learning session for young students.
According to Ellen B Labastida of the Overseas Filipino Investor and Entrepreneur Movement (OFIE-M), the talk was aimed at teaching the youth the rules of basic investing for teens and opportunities when pursuing a career in baking and finance.
The topics covered how to handle personal finances, fundamental principles in investing and the importance of investing early. It also covered skills one needs to develop in pursuing a career in finance and future prospects in the field such as compensation and benefits, Ellen added.
The other sessions of the talk series were attended by around 200 overseas Filipinos. The sessions covered Basic Education in Stock Investing, Guided Investor Fearless Trader (GIFT) series which discussed different topics on Fundamental and Technical Analysis in stocks investing as well as creating your investing and trading plan.
A session was also held on"Understanding TRAIN Law (Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion tax reform program by Philippine Government), Everyday Economics and Philippine Economic Outlook" for Filipinos by Dr. Alvin Ang, economist and director of Ateneo Center of Economic Research and Development.
"MADTalks under PBC aims to conduct more learning sessions for the Filipino community in Qatar with the hope that Filipino expats and families will become responsible financial stewards of their hard- earned money and will learn to put them into proper, legitimate entrepreneurship endeavors and investment vehicles back in the Philippines when they go home for good," said Ellen.
