Kuala LUMPUR: The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has decided to apply video assistant referee (VAR) starting from the 2018 AFC Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in the history of the continental competition after FIFA adopted the technology at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. The decision of applying the VAR in the remainder of the current version of the AFC Champions League comes after the signs of success shown by the VAR, despite some controversy over the not using it in some decisions affecting a number of World Cup matches. Qatari football will be double represented in the AFC Champions League quarter-finals, by Al Duhail and Al Sadd who will meet Iran's Persepolis FC and Esteghlal FC in the Quarter-finals. The Qatar Football Association (QFA) was a pioneer in applying VAR at the local level after it was adopted at the Qatar Cup and HH The Emir's Cup. (QNA)
