QATAR Foundation (QF) celebrated the Class of 2018 in the presence of the Father Amir His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al Thani and QF Chairperson Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser at its Convocation Ceremony held in Education City's Ceremonial Court in Doha on Tuesday.
QF Vice Chairperson and CEO HE Sheikha Hind bint Hamad al Thani honoured the 778 graduates from Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) and QF's eight partner universities in Education City in the presence of the deans of the respective universities.
The momentous event took place at the same venue where the first QF Convocation Ceremony was hosted 10 years ago.
This year's convocation saw honouring of 206 graduates from HBKU, 105 graduates from Texas A&M University at Qatar, 61 graduates from Northwestern University in Qatar, 67 graduates from Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar, 34 graduates from Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar, 90 graduates from Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, 52 graduates from Georgetown University in Qatar, 51 graduates from University College London Qatar and 112 graduates from HEC Paris in Qatar.
The theme of this year's ceremony 'Then and Now' highlighted the growth experienced by the graduating students during their time at Education City. The keynote remarks on the occasion were delivered by Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar alumna Ghada al Khater and Georgetown University in Qatar alumni Touhami Abi who inspired the graduates with the lessons of life they learnt outside the Education City.
The highlight of the ceremony was, however, the honouring of Swar al Dahab Ali for winning the inaugural Akhlaquna Award. HH Sheikha Moza handed over the award to Ali for his initiative 'Mercy in Giving', which emulates one of the four morals of the Akhlaquna initiative.
The Akhlaquna Award is designed to recognise and celebrate young people who display exemplary moral character for the good of humanity. It was first announced by HH Sheikha Moza during QF's 2017 Convocation Ceremony.
Speaking to the local media on the sidelines of the event, Ali said he started his initiative in Sudan and was inspired by the generous act of a man he witnessed there. He added that he looked up to HH Sheikha Moza as his icon.
Through the initiative, Ali said, he aims to create a movement that unites various sectors, including education, health and the society at large to tackle specific issues within society and also ensure that people practice mercy in their daily lives.
"I believe that doing something for the humanity is what is important in life. I have been working with different charity organisations across Qatar. And through this award, I hope to work with QF to discuss the projects with all the organisations in the country," he said.
The ceremony concluded with the beaming graduates proudly walking through the 'Door to the Future' symbolising the start of a new chapter in their lives while their beloved families cheered for them.
