The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) has confirmed that no case of monkeypox has been recorded or discovered in Qatar so far.
The ministry indicated that it has taken a full set of public health measures for the early detection of any suspected cases, if they appear, in order to contain any possible spread of the virus, in addition to the Ministry of Public Health's monitoring of the global and regional epidemiological situation and taking all necessary precautions.
The ministry has directed healthcare professionals in both the public and private sectors to monitor potential patients who may show symptoms of monkeypox and to report any suspected cases to health authorities as the healthcare sector is fully prepared to manage any suspected or confirmed cases.
This comes after the detection of monkeypox cases in at least 12 countries since May 13, but the virus has not spread in those countries.
Monkeypox is a viral infection that occurs primarily in the tropical rainforest regions of Central and West Africa and may occasionally spread to other regions. Monkeypox virus was first discovered in 1958 and the first human case was reported in Africa in 1970 and this is not the first time that the virus has spread outside Africa. People with monkeypox usually have symptoms that include fever, a chickenpox-like rash, swollen lymph nodes, and other health complications.
Monkeypox is transmitted to humans through close contact with an infected person or animal, or with material contaminated with the virus, but it is less prevalent than other infectious diseases including COVID-19 and seasonal influenza.
The ministry explained that people are unlikely to contract monkeypox unless they have recently traveled to Central or West Africa or had physical contact with someone who has monkeypox.
