The Ministry of Interior on Saturday said the police took action against 34 people for not wearing masks where they are mandatory, bringing the total number of people caught since a crackdown on violators of COVID-19 precautionary measures began to 1,760.
The police also reffered 15 people to the Public Prosecution for violating the limit on car occupancy. It is currently banned in Qatar for more than four people, including the driver, to travel in a car, unless the occupants are of a family.
The police in Qatar have had a busy few days since they stepped up their crackdown on people ignoring the country's safeguards to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
Over past few days, the police referred to the Public Prosecution hundreds of people who didn't wear masks in public.
As per a Cabinet decision, drawn from the Law No. 17 of 1990 regarding infectious diseases and preventive measures, people who do not wear masks outside their homes may face penalties of up to three years in prison and/or QR200,000 fine.
