Minister of Labor HE Dr Ali bin Samikh Al Marri has affirmed that Qatar has supported the United Nations Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons, since its adoption, based on its commitment to promoting and protecting human rights, which are at the core of Qatar National Vision 2030.
In a statement he made at the high-level meeting of the General Assembly on the progress made in implementing the United Nations Global Action Plan to Combat Human Trafficking, His Excellency pointed out the establishment the National Committee to Combat Trafficking in Persons in 2017.
He said that it is an important step in the efforts of Qatar in this regard, as through the committee, a national plan was drawn up to combat trafficking in persons and to follow up its implementation, and to coordinate between the various authorities in the country in order to prevent trafficking, prosecute its perpetrators, protect victims and provide suitable places for their shelter and rehabilitation, in addition to forming national and international partnerships to combat trafficking in persons.
He referred in particular to the committee's recent achievement by launching a guide in cooperation with the ILO office in Qatar, entitled "Together to confront forced labor and human trafficking."
He singled out the cooperation between the National Committee, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the United Nations Migration Mission in Qatar in order to enhance awareness and education efforts and build the capacity of national cadres.
The minister noted the recent measures taken by Qatar at the legislative and executive levels to promote and protect the rights of incoming foreign workers, which made Qatar a leading country in the region by completely abolishing the sponsorship system, abolishing the exit permit and facilitating the movement of workers and their transfer, establishing a non-discriminatory minimum wage for workers and domestic employees, as well as strengthening the voice of workers and effective remedies and establishing a workers' support and insurance fund.
He stressed that Qatar has spared no effort to support international efforts in the field of combating trafficking in persons at the international level, as Qatar was one of the first countries to donate to the United Nations Trust Fund for Victims of Trafficking in Persons, especially women and children.
He expressed Qatar's welcome for the adoption of the political declaration issued by this meeting, and its affirmation of its support through the joint statement issued by the "high-level side event organized by the State of Qatar on the sidelines of this meeting, in cooperation with the United Kingdom, Austria, Bangladesh, Nigeria and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime on " Accelerating the Level of Commitment to Fight Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery During the Global COVID-19 Crisis and Beyond".
The minister reiterated Qatar's commitment to implementing the United Nations Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons and to move forward with its efforts to combat this scourge at the national, regional and international levels.
