The Ministry of Municipality inspected 161,748 tonnes of vegetables that were imported to Qatar in December and destroyed more than 21 tonnes for not meeting its stringent standards. The destroyed vegetables had rot, stones and pests in them, the ministry said.
These inspections are the first line of defence to protect the flora in Qatar from agricultural pests and invasive species. It is a precautionary measure which aims at protecting the plant wealth in the country against the danger of pests coming from aboard. Such measure stipulates that all plants, agricultural products or any other materials subject to the regulations of phytosanitary shall be liable to agricultural quarantine procedures and that all other agricultural production inputs shall be compliant with the applicable conditions and specifications. The Agricultural Quarantine Offices shall apply the Agricultural Quarantine Law No. 24 of 2005, its executive regulation, decrees and circulars.
