The healthcare services law issued on Tuesday would make health insurance mandatory for expatriates and visitors when it comes into force in Qatar in six months, the Ministry of Public Health confirmed on Wednesday.
His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on Tuesday issued Law No. 22 of 2021, which will become effective six months after its publication in the official gazette.
The Ministry of Public Health on Wednesday said the law would work to develop and organise the health sector in the country.
Based on the new law, a mandatory health insurance system will be implemented for all expatriates and visitors to the country, which should provide basic health care services to them through government and private health facilities, as per their coverage policy.
The provisions of the law also obligates employer to provide health insurance to non-Qatari workers through insurance companies registered with the Ministry of Public Health. The same obligation applies to a resident who bring someone to Qatar.
As per a draft of the law that was approved by the Shura Council earlier this year, proof of health insurance would be a prerequisite before a residence permit can be granted or renewed.
Visitors will also require having health insurance valid for the duration of their stay before being granted a visa.
The ministry confirmed that the health insurance system would lead to the development of the health sector and services provided to the public by alleviating the challenges facing the health care sector resulting from the steady population growth, through the participation of the public and private sectors in providing health care services to the population, which in turn will reduce waiting time.
In the government health facilities in the country and provide appointments for medical consultations easily within a record time that meets the health needs of citizens and at the highest level of quality.
The ministry said it would set standards for the provision of healthcare services in government and private health facilities in the coming period.
