The Indian expatriate community in Qatar is sending 200 oxygen cylinders and 43 oxygen concentrators to COVID-19-hit India aboard INS Kolkata, one of the seven ships deployed by the Indian Navy for shipment of medical aid from various countries.
"We thank Indian Community in Qatar for their generous contribution through [Indian Community Benevolent Forum]. 200 O2 cylinders and 43 O2 concentrators to be shipped by #INSKolkata @indiannavy today to India. Miles apart yet part of India's fight against covid #indiafightscovid," the Indian Embassy in Qatar tweeted on Sunday.
As India suffers the world’s worst coronavirus crisis, hospitals in the country say their patients are dying because of a shortage of oxygen as Covid case numbers and deaths set new records for a third day running.
India has recorded nearly a million infections in three days, with 346,786 new cases overnight into Saturday.
The number of deaths across India rose by 2,624 in the 24 hours to Saturday, up from 2,263 on Friday.
The World Health Organization (WHO) said the situation in India was a "devastating reminder" of what the coronavirus could do.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that the Indian Navy has launched 'Operation Samudra Setu-II' to meet the oxygen requirement in the country. Under the Samudra Setu-II, the Navy has deployed seven ships Kolkata, Kochi, Talwar, Tabar, Trikand, Jalashwa and Airavat for shipment of liquid medical oxygen-filled cryogenic containers and associated medical equipment from various countries.
The Defence Ministry informed that INS Kolkata and INS Talwar were the first batch of ships that were immediately diverted for the task and entered port of Manama, Bahrain on April 30. While, INS Talwar, with 40 metri tonnes Liquid Medical Oxygen (LMO) embarked, is headed back to India.
INS Kolkata has proceeded to Doha, Qatar for embarking medical supplies and will subsequently head to Kuwait for embarking liquid Oxygen tanks.
