With the designation of Al Wakra Hospital as a COVID-19 health facility, the number of such facilities solely dedicated to providing medical care and support for COVID-19 patients has increased to seven, Minister of Public Health HE Dr Hanan Mohammed Al Kuwari has said.
“In recent weeks we have seen a significant increase in the number of people requiring admission to hospital due to moderate and severe COVID-19 symptoms. The designation of Al Wakra Hospital, one of the largest hospitals in HMC’s network, means we now have seven facilities solely dedicated to providing medical care and support for COVID-19 patients,” the minister said.
In designating the Al Wakra Hospital as an exclusives COVID-19 facility, the ministry has suspended the operations of its Emergency Department to make room for dedicated pandemic care.
Recently, the cabinet stopped the provision of medical services in private health facilities, except for emergency cases, and allow any of these private health facilities to provide some of their medical services if possible through modern means of communication. The decision was part of a strategy to enhance the ability of medical care workers to provide healthcare related to Covid-19 and the vaccination programme. Closing nonessential services will help support efforts to respond to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Chief Medical Officer at HMC Dr Abdulla al-Ansari has said that Al Wakra Hospital will be a great boost to the capacity designated for Covid-19 patients. He said the decision regarding the hospital was part of a strategy to ensure the healthcare system's ability to meet any future increase in the number of Covid-19 patients who require hospitalisation. He said that Al Wakra Hospital will add 400 beds and 150 Intensive Care Unit beds in case they are needed.
He noted the increase in cases was also accompanied by an increase in hospitalisation with mild to severe cases. He added there are currently more than 2050 Covid-19 patients receiving treatment at HMC facilities, including 350 in the ICU and that it was clear that cases are more severe with the arrival of the second wave compared to the first.
All medical services provided at Al Wakra hospital except for dental care, dialysis, and treating burns will be moved to other medical facilities.
