The fishing harbours at Al Khor, Ruwais, Al Wakra and Doha are getting active as the ban on the use of trawling nets for fishing has come to end.
Around six trawlers that arrived at the fishing harbour in Al Wakra on Thursday after staying docked for several weeks, had good catches. The harbor in Al Khor, too, saw similar scenes, as vessels came back with boatloads of sheri, black spot snapper and jesh.
The trawling ban was implemented by the government to conserve and maintain the marine life in breeding season that begins in the middle of August.
Speaking to Qatar Tribune, a fisherman in Al Khor said, “Use of fishing nets was banned for the last two months. We were allowed to fish with only hooks. Now, the ban has been lifted.”
According to a Central Fish Market official, the supply of local fish will increase in the coming days and their prices are set to drop. During winter, the fish will emerge from the colder depths of the ocean, helping the fishermen to make big catches in the next couple of months.”
A senior official of a fishing company said, “We are trying to bring back a good number of fishermen who are stranded in their home countries due to the COVID-19 travel restrictions.”
Sales Manager at a Hyper Market in Doha said, “Supply of local fish will go up in the coming days. We are planning to open special seafood counters and provide special offers for local fish.”
