The repercussions of the COVID- 19 pandemic remind everyone that the Earth and its peoples are one family, His Highness the Amir of the State of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani has said.
“We are on the threshold of the third decade of the current century, and despite the estimated efforts, the world is facing unprecedented challenges,” HH the Amir said in his virtual speech as he addressed a high-level meeting commemorating the 75th anniversary of the United Nations on Monday.
HH the Amir said the exacerbation of regional and international trouble spots and problems of disarmament, terrorism, the environment and sustainable development were some of the foremost of those challenges.
“One of the most dangerous challenges facing the international community since the founding of the United Nations is the issue of collective confrontation with the threat of epidemics, and it is assumed that the COVID- 19 pandemic and its serious negative repercussions on lives, public health and countries' economies remind us that the peoples of the earth are only one family,” he said.
In his speech, HH the Amir reiterated Qatar’s steadfast support towards the realisation of UN goals.
“We affirm the firm position of Qatar in support of the principles, charter and goals of the United Nations, and stress the need to implement the political declaration adopted today, to promote pluralism, diplomacy, respect for state sovereignty, and to activate the role of women and youth in all fields.”
The United Nations has been based on a common understanding of human rights and its dignity, and it has made great strides in achieving the goals agreed upon by the international community, he said.
“The founding of the United Nations represented a great hope for mankind after the horrors of the Second World War, and to draw conclusions from it and from the absence of global framing between countries, which does not accept wars to settle disputes and agreed and binding principles that allow collective response to genocide.
“Our meeting today constitutes an important opportunity to renew the commitment of the international community to the letter and spirit of the United Nations Charter, and that it will continue to be a beacon in our international work and requires a review and evaluation of multilateral international action and the need for serious work to overcome obstacles.
“We renew the commitment of the State of Qatar to work with the United Nations, continue providing support to it, and strengthening partnership with its agencies to enable it to face common global challenges and achieve the goals it seeks.
“We affirm the firm position of the State of Qatar in support of the principles, charter and goals of the United Nations, and stress the need to implement the political declaration adopted today and to enhance pluralism and diplomacy.
Respecting the sovereignty of states and activating the role of women and youth in all fields.”
