A new art installation that serves as a "tribute to Qatar’s history and traditions" has been unveiled in Lusail, HE Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Qatar Museums (QM) Chairperson, said.
The artwork, called "Egal" by Qatari artist Shouq Almana represents a piece of cultural headwear worn by Qatari men as part of the traditional attire.
"The ‘egal’ is typically worn on top of the 'ghitra', a square scarf. The raised stance of the ‘egal’ is a symbol of respect and appreciation towards Qatar’s leadership, citizens, and residents for their unity, resilience, and dedication to the State of Qatar," Sheikha Mayassa said.

Egal is one of the two art installations announced as part of the second edition of the 5/6 Initiative, which invites artists to conceptualise and propose a permanent public artwork that explores artistic interpretations of social cohesion and solidarity. They were announced by Qatar Museums, in collaboration with Qatari Diar and Msheireb Properties.
Following the blockade of Qatar in 2017, June 5 has become a date synonymous in the country with resilience and solidarity. To celebrate Qatar’s unique cultural heritage, history and sense of belonging, the 5/6 Initiative invites artists to propose a permanent public artwork to be commissioned and unveiled in 2022.
