EXPRESSING Space Exhibition, an art show featuring more than 50 paintings and a number of sculptures by celebrated artists from Georgia, opened at Building 18, Gallery 2 of Katara on Monday.
The exhibition is organised by the Cultural Village Foundation-Katara in cooperation with the Embassy of Georgia in Doha and Vanda Art Gallery, a prime cultural platform in Tbilisi priding itself to be the oldest private art gallery in Georgia.
Georgia's Ambassador to Qatar HE Ekaterine Meiering-Mikadze along with Katara General Manager Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim al Sulaiti inaugurated the event in the presence of several members of Doha diplomatic corps and other guests.
"Art travels as we know and great art travels even far. Expressing Space Exhibition is an invitation to embark on this voyage towards the known and the unknown. Following Qatari artist Ali Dasmal al Kuwari's successful inaugural exhibition 'Record II' in Georgia, Vanda Art Gallery was graciously invited to bring the works of seven contemporary partners and sculptors to Qatar. This art exhibition presents Georgia's best art. The artists will be in Doha for a three-day workshop which we hope to be another successful event," the Ambassador said.
On the occasion, HE Meiering-Mikadze announced the event to be her last in the capacity of ambassador. She said,"As Ambassador of Georgia, I am proud that over the course of five years Georgia has firmly been established on the cultural map of Qatar, the Gulf and beyond. As my ambassadorial term in Doha is coming to an end, I recall with gratitude the numerous remarkable events that have brought people together."
The art exhibition, which will run until October 2, showcases the works of Georgian sculptor and artist George Japaridze. Eleven of his sculptures including a set of 32 x 81 cm three horses made of bronze adorn the centre of the gallery. The sculptures of Japaridze feature birds, falcon, panther and deer made of bronze, onyx, copper and enamel.
World-renowned Georgian artist Mamuka Tsetskhladze also debuts his works in Qatar which includes impressions of Rome, Paris, Istanbul and Tbilisi. Tsetskhladze's works are kept in numerous prominent museums and private collections all over the world.
Other featured Georgian artists at the exhibition are contemporary surrealist Alex Berdysheff, visual artist Levan Mindiashbvili, Gogi Chagelishvili who is known for his avant-garde thinking, Gia (George) Gugushvili and Gogi Lazarashvili who is revered for his unique style in abstractionism.
A three-day workshop with Georgian artists will be held from September 19 to 21 at Katara Art Studios.
