The destruction of the Kakhova dam in southern Ukraine, which was hit by an explosion on Tuesday, will continue to have devastating effects on the region, Ukrainian officials said on Wednesday. Water from the Kakhovka reservoir continues to flow out over the broken dam wall, flooding large parts of the region in southern Ukraine, where there are 80 settlements in the floodplain, the Ukrainian General Staff said. Ukrainian and Russian media showed flooded houses and villages. People were wading in the water to safety. Rescue workers carried elderly people who could not walk on their hands to dry land. “The dam’s structure is likely to deteriorate further over the next few days, causing additional flooding,” the ministry said in its daily Twitter report on the war in Ukraine.
