The United States and Colombia will use their law enforcement and security relationship to target drug trafficking, US President Donald Trump said Thursday after meeting Colombia's president at the White House.
Trump also said a border wall along the US-Mexico border is a"major" part of his administration's work targeting drug trafficking."The drug epidemic is poisoning too many American lives and we're going to stop it in many different ways. One of them will be the wall," Trump said, speaking at a joint press conference with Juan Manuel Santos. He said he looked forward to working with Colombia to target drug trafficking.
"Together we will continue to fight the criminal networks responsible for the deadly drug trade that our people have a really strong commitment to getting rid of, because they want a much brighter future," he said.
Santos said the two countries must continue and extend the fight against organized crime, including transnational crime, which is responsible not just for drug trafficking but also for human trafficking and illegal mining. Trump said Colombia must confront the danger of cocaine and coca production, which he said reached a record high last year.
"No area is more important than our joint effort to end the terrible drug crimes that plague both of our countries," Trump said. When Santos ducked a question on whether or not the border wall would help stop the drug trade.
