Meerat Ramadan, an initiative by the Cultural Village Foundation-Katara to sell food items at a low cost throughout the Holy Month of Ramadan, was opened on Thursday.
Vegetables, nuts, an array of poultry and meat products, dairy products, and Arabic sweets and honey are among the food items available to the public at an affordable price.
Around 35 outlets, including Widam Food and Al Meera, have stocked up their stalls with various food items for the holy month.
"The inauguration of Meerat Ramadan is a great opportunity for everyone to buy their necessities in preparation for the Holy Month of Ramadan. It is a one-stop place where visitors are welcome to enjoy a distinctive ambiance that combines the experience of shopping with spirituality," Katara General Manager Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim al Sulati said. The event will run until June 29.
Organisers said the food items are priced in a way that enables Katara's visitors to meet their grocery requirements at a low cost. The market will offer a wide array of fresh produce and cupboard staples that are usually in demand during the period.
One of the stalls, Al Janoub, is selling a variety of nuts and dates from Saudi Arabia priced from QR10 to QR30.
Global Farm for Agricultural Supplies is selling vegetables like cucumber, tomatoes, capsicum and eggplants harvested from a farm in Umm Salal. The farm produce are priced at QR6 per pack, while other varieties are available at QR5 per kg. Bottles of honey sold by Abu Yusuf Apiaries are priced in the range of QR100 to QR350. Their products are from a bee farm located in Al Shahaneya.
Athba, a new local poultry farm in Doha , is selling 100 percent vegetable-fed chicken and quail birds. Several stalls are also offering clothing accessories, perfumes, oil and incense. A kiddie corner and a majlis were also set up at the venue to ensure the comfort of families visiting the market.
"After the Mahaseel Festival where local vegetables and other food products were made available, this event is another initiative that caters to all families. We truly appreciate the efforts of Katara to make their place more family-friendly and convenient for local shoppers," according to one of the first visitors at the market.
Another expat said,"I hope there will be more vegetable stalls to open so we can just do our food shopping in here after strolling around Katara and enjoying the refreshing view of their beach."
The market is open from 4pm to 10pm but is subject to change during the holy month.
