Qatar Cancer Society (QCS) participated in a meeting of the Arab breast cancer control associations held to prepare a proposal for establishment of an Arab union for breast cancer control under the umbrella of Arab League.

The meeting was organised by El-Amel Association, The Pierre and Marie Curie Centre, in cooperation with the Algerian Ministry of Health on March 4 and 5 in Algeria under the slogan “Together for them”.

The first day saw the opening speech of the organisers as well as speeches of the representatives of the Algerian Ministry of Health, World Health Organisation and World Cancer Federation. Arab societies participating in the field of breast cancer control, including the Qatar Cancer Society were also shared their experiences.

The second day witnessed a discussion on the proposal to establish an Arab Union for breast cancer control, its objectives and mechanism of action. The role of media in the effort, women’s health and rights under international and Arab laws were also discussed. 14 Arab countries including Qatar, Algeria, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Mauritania, Libya, Sudan, Egypt, Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon, and Iraq participated in the meeting.

Sheikh Dr Khalid bin Jabor Al Thani, chairman of the Qatar Cancer Society, praised the idea of an Arab Union for Breast Cancer Control under the umbrella of the Arab League as it will significantly impact the fight against breast cancer in the region’s countries, especially since breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer among women not only at the Arab level, but worldwide. It places a burden on countries, especially developing ones, and reflects negatively on the health, psychological and social status of women.

He appreciated the efforts of countries participating in the initiative to establish an Arab union, which would unite all efforts in the related fields and launch joint programmes and projects, especially in the fields of awareness and professional development through training, qualification, and capacity building of workers in the health sector to raise the level of competence, as well as scientific research in breast cancer. The programmes and projects will also help in advocating for women living with the disease and integrating them into society by setting shared goals and implementing them in the medium and long term, in addition to focusing on unifying efforts in preparing programs for prevention, early detection, exchanging expertise and experiences among different Arab countries.

He affirmed the charity’s keenness to participate in all initiatives that serve its vision which is to be the community partnership platform to make Qatar a leader in cancer prevention and control by working with partners to educate the community, support, empower, and advocate for individuals living with cancer, and to engage in professional development and scientific research in the field of cancer.

“The Society is a member of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), one of the largest international institutions, which requires QCS to have more responsibilities and tasks to remain an active member in this global platform, he added.
