The Filipino community in Qatar hosted a welcome event for the Philippine National Football Team (AZKALS) at UNO Cafe in Doha Souq Mall on March 26. The event also served as a nostalgic meet-and-greet for the team’s fans.

Organised by Kulinarya Qatar, Association of Filipino Realtors & Entrepreneur Executives in Qatar (AFREEQ) and AKO-OFW, in collaboration with Balitang Q, the well-attended dinner event was jam-packed with the team’s supporters and well-wishers. The proud Philippine squad headed by its captain Neil Leonard Etheridge, together with AZKALS’ new head coach Barae Jrondi from Morocco, happily engaged the cheering crowds.

AFREEQ Chairman Joseph Timothy Rivera, who hosted the event, was pleased that the team’s new head coach is Doha-based and expressed confidence that coach Barae’s vast experience in the sport would catapult the AZKALS to the next FIFA World Cup in the Americas. Jrondi has served many football clubs and associations in various capacities, and operates a school for young soccer enthusiasts.

“I’m delighted to see new young players in the team and there is no doubt that this batch of the AZKALS will definitely take their places, while continuing to inspire our young generation,” exclaimed UNO Café General Manager Jeanette Gotangogan, who was happy to sponsor the event venue.

Kulinarya Qatar Chairperson Dahlia Agbanlog was also pleased with the evening’s festivities, calling for overwhelming community support for the AZKALS’ friendly match with the Jordanian National Football Team to be held at the Al Wakra Stadium on Tuesday, March 28, at 9:30pm. AZKALS’ assistant coaches Ernie Nierras and Stepehen Schrock, GK Coach Roland Muller, Fitness coach Nabyl Berkaoui, Admin Manager Katrina Liscano, Media Officer Ace Bright, Physiotherapists Bianca Acebedo and Kevin Conejos, and Equipment Manager Chester Peliño were also present on the occasion. Members of the Philippine National Football Squad are: Jose Elmer Porteria, Amani Aguinaldo, Carlos Alberto Martinez De Murga, Michael Kempter, John Patrick Strauss, Mark Andrew Hartman, Jesse Thomas Curran, Santiago Rublico, John Albert Luis Lucero, Javier Augustine Gayoso, Bienvenido Maranon, Christian Rotini, Dennis Chung, Miguel Antonio Mendoza, Griffin Connor McDaniel, Gavin Muens, Julian Schwarzer and Mandy Lloyd Ignacio.

Balitang Q’s CJ Dulalia Rombano served as a liaison officer of the AZKALS to the Filipino community in Doha.

Team AZKALS will also be paying a courtesy call to Ambassador HE Lilibeth Pono at the Philippine Embassy in Doha.
