A strong earthquake jolted parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan on Tuesday night, prompting people in major cities to run out of their homes in fear.

The US Geological Survey said the epicentre of the 6.5-magnitude quake was in the border region of Afghanistan and it struck at a depth of 187 kilometres.

Pakistan's Metrological Department put the magnitude at 6.8, agency director Mahr Sahibzad Khan told broadcaster Geo television.

The country's National Disaster Management Authority said no loss of life or destruction had been reported so far.

Panicked people could be seen fleeing shaking residential and commercial buildings.

Health Minister Abdul Qadir Patil ordered authorities to declare a state of emergency in Islamabad's hospitals.
