At least three people, including an army officer, were killed on Sunday in airstrikes in central Syria, a war monitor reported.

The attack targeted an arms depot manned by Iranian-backed militias and an outpost of the Syrian air defences located between provinces of Hama and Tartus, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights added.

The two other fatalities remain unidentified.  Two others were injured in the attack, said the watchdog that has been documenting violence in Syria since the civil war began in 2011. The British-based observatory said the same region came under a similar attack in August last year.Earlier Sunday, Syria’s state media reported that Israel had unleashed missile strikes against some outposts in Hama and Tartus, injuring three service members.

“Our air defences repulsed the aggression missiles and shot down some of them,” the source said without providing further details. Material damage also resulted from the attack.

The Israeli military declined to comment on the reports.

“We don’t comment on reports in the foreign media,” the Israeli army said.

Earlier this week, Syria’s state media reported that Israel had attacked Aleppo airport in northern Syria and put it out of service.

The Israeli military did not comment on either attack, but Israel regularly bombs targets in neighbouring Syria in an effort to prevent arch-rival Iran from expanding its influence there.
