BAN on parking of"some kinds of mechanical and heavy vehicles" in open spaces in the Doha is being strictly monitored by the authorities and has been lauded by residents.
Large billboards in different South Asian languages can be seen in parking lots which not only spread awareness among the motorists but also act as a deterrent for truck drivers.
With construction and road works across the city shrinking the parking areas, the strict implementation of the ban has come as a huge relief for motorists.
"It is so difficult to find a parking space in Doha. Road construction activities are going on everywhere. Earlier, heavy vehicles were parked in open spaces, even in residential areas, encroaching upon the parking zones. But now, we can find parking spots more easily, ever since a restriction on heavy vehicles using parking areas in the city has been rightly put in place," said Sohaib Ahmed, a local entrepreneur.
Residents like G Sameer, however, claimed that continuous building and road construction works have forced certain mechanical and heavy vehicles to be parked at construction sites, for loading and unloading of materials, thereby blocking roads or occupying open spaces.
Another resident Shibu P, a sales executive, said immediately after the ban was announced in 2014, there were parking violations by truck drivers leading to traffic congestion, but 'no parking' billboards with specific instructions are now helping both the heavy vehicle drivers and other motorists.
The information in South Asian languages and location maps on display at many places have been helpful for the motorists and the transportation companies to avoid violations.
