As the Brazil team created waves of joy in the Stadium 974 (Ras Abu Aboud stadium) last Monday, beating South Korea in a FIFA World Cup 2022 match, Qatar also earned a goal in the history of sports for environment-friendly construction of the stadium. The unique stadium, built with 974 recycled shipping containers, met its target with the Brazil vs South Korea match.

The construction of the waterfront stadium aimed to mitigate environmental damage and ensure sustainability through making use of shipping containers that can be reused. It will be dismantled soon after the World Cup 2022 and all the parts will be repurposed.

All the containers are made from recycled steel, and the number ‘974’ symbolizes Qatar’s international dialing code.

The 40,000-seat Stadium 974 is the first stadium to be dismantled in the history of the World Cup. Most parts of the stadium, including the seats, will be donated to countries in need of sport infrastructure.

A senior fabrication engineer at Qatar Energay said, “The Stadium 974 is a remarkable construction and represents a message to the world to adopt environment-friendly construction. The stadium will always be remembered in the history of sports and engineering.”

The Stadium 974 hosted its first match on November 30, 2021 on the opening day of the FIFA Arab Cup 2021, between the UAE and Syria. The stadium had hosted six matches during the tournament.
