World number one Carlos Alcaraz said on Saturday he will miss the ATP Finals and the Davis Cup Finals after suffering an abdominal injury the previous day at the Paris Masters tournament.

“Unfortunately I won’t make the ATP Finals or the Davis Cup Finals.

It is tough and painful for me to miss these two events, which are so important to me, but all I can do is be positive and focus on my recovery,” the Spaniard tweeted.

Alcarez, 19, said examination revealed he suffered “an internal oblique muscle tear in the left abdominal wall with an estimated recovery time of six weeks.”

Alcarez retired in Paris on Friday during the second-set tie-break of his quarter-final against Norway’s Holger Rune, who was 3-1 up at the time in the deciding game and had won the first set 6-3.

The teenager won his first grand slam title two months ago at the US Open and climbed to the top of the rankings with it.

The ATP Finals take place November 13-20 in Turin, Italy, and the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga follow November 22-27.

Should he be fit again in six weeks that would be in time for the 2023 season which starts in early January and has an early highlight in the January 16-29 Australian Open.
