Qatar is stepping up preparations for the upcoming local agricultural season, with the Permanent Committee for the Supervision of Central Markets inspecting the readiness of Al Sailiya Central Market to ensure smooth supply and distribution of fresh produce, support local farmers and strengthen food security.
The field visit focused on assessing the market’s operational and service readiness ahead of the season, particularly arrangements to facilitate the marketing of locally grown agricultural products and meet expected consumer demand.
The committee reviewed the readiness of market facilities and support services to handle increased supply and marketing activities. It also assessed arrangements for the smooth movement and distribution of agricultural products and examined whether the market was adequately equipped for the new season.
The inspection covered the availability and diversity of fruits and vegetables, as well as the needs of local farmers and market workers. Discussions focused on strengthening support for domestic agricultural production and facilitating farmers’ access to the central market system.
The measures are intended to expand marketing opportunities for local produce, enhance the sustainability of Qatar’s agricultural sector and minimise potential supply disruptions during the season.
The committee also reviewed the market’s operational efficiency, including cleaning, maintenance and organisational arrangements, and measures to ensure a suitable environment for vendors and shoppers.
Key operational challenges were identified during the visit, with the committee discussing solutions aimed at improving market services and ensuring efficient supply and distribution.
The committee stressed the importance of continued monitoring and stronger coordination among relevant entities to enhance the performance of central markets and ensure they are prepared to meet seasonal requirements.
The inspection is part of ongoing efforts to improve Qatar’s central market system, strengthen supply and marketing channels, support local agricultural products and maintain market stability.
With the local agricultural season approaching, preparations at Al Sailiya Central Market are expected to facilitate the marketing of locally produced fruits and vegetables, improve farmers’ access to consumers and help ensure the continued availability of fresh produce.
The initiative also supports Qatar’s broader food security objectives by strengthening domestic production and enhancing the resilience and efficiency of the national food supply chain.
