Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has successfully performed Qatar’s first subperiosteal dental implant and jaw reconstruction procedure using virtual surgical planning, three-dimensional simulation and printing technology.

The milestone procedure was carried out by the Department of Dentistry at Al Wakra Hospital in collaboration with HMC’s Oral and Craniomaxillofacial Surgery Department, offering a new treatment option for patients who are not suitable candidates for conventional dental implants.

The surgery was performed at HMC’s Surgical Specialty Center by a team led by Dr Khalid Abdel-Galil, Senior Consultant and Chair of the Oral and Craniomaxillofacial Surgery Department.

The patient, a woman in her sixties, had lost all her lower-jaw teeth and suffered from severe jawbone atrophy.

The advanced procedure uses three-dimensional imaging and virtual surgical planning to create a digital model of the patient’s jaw before surgery. This allows surgeons to design customised components and plan the procedure with greater precision. (TNN) Page 3
