Buenos Aires

Argentina has threatened legal action against the United Kingdom if it does not stop an oil project off the Falkland Islands. Argentine President Javier Milei gave the UK two weeks to halt work on the Sea Lion project.

Otherwise, Argentina would ask the Hamburg-based International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea to order a temporary halt to the project, he said in a statement published on X.

The Sea Lion project in the North Falkland Basin is operating under British licences, which Argentina rejects as illegitimate.

The archipelago, known in Argentina as the Islas Malvinas, has been a British Overseas Territory since 1833. However, Buenos Aires bases its claim on the legal succession of the former Spanish colonial empire. In 1982, a military conflict broke out over the small archipelago in the South Atlantic after the ruling Argentine military junta ordered the occupation of the islands.
