Vienna: A secret Syrian facility dating from the rule of former president Bashar Al-Assad was configured for nuclear weapons, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) head Rafael Grossi said in Vienna on Monday.
The head of the UN’s nuclear watchdog said he was not passing judgment on Syrian intentions, but he noted that the never-completed reactor had been designed for the efficient production of material that would have been “directly suitable for the manufacture of nuclear weapons.” The IAEA is working with the current Syrian government to investigate the Assad-era nuclear programme. IAEA experts recently secured tons of previously undisclosed stocks of uranium and reactor fuel rods. (DPA)
