Istanbul Four Turkish soldiers are dead and three others are injured amid an ongoing operation against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in northern Iraq, the Turkish Defence Ministry reported on Tuesday.
No information was provided on casualties suffered by the PKK, which is banned in Turkey and listed as a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union. The Turkish military operation was launched in the middle of last month.
On Monday, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that a new military operation could be launched in northern Syria, where Turkey is acting to contain the YPG Kurdish militia and has occupied Syrian territory along the joint border.
Ankara sees the YPG as a part of the PKK and, thus, also as a terrorist organization, while the US has supported the YPG in combatting Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. (dpa)
