Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday met with International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach, pleding that the upcoming Beijing Winter Games will be a success despite the coronavirus pandemic.
Xi told Bach at China’s state guest house that the February 4-20 Olympics would “be held smoothly as scheduled” and would be “simple, safe and wonderful.” State TV said that Xi was confident that China could guarantee the health and safety of everyone at the Games, and that organizers were making big efforts to meet all the needs of the athletes and to do a good job.
Xi has rarely met foreign visitors and not travelled abroad since the coronavirus outbreak started two years ago. Bach arrived in Beijing on Saturday and isolated as a precaution before starting his work around the Games on Tuesday. IOC meetings and an IOC Session are scheduled ahead of the opening ceremony at Beijing’s National Stadium, the Bird’s Nest, next week Friday. China has a zero-Covid policy and its maesures at the Games are much stricter than those in Tokyo at last year’s summer Olympics. All acredited people at the Games are in a closed loop environment and not in contact with the Chinese population, and everyone is tested for the Sars-CoV-2 virus on a daily basis.
