Washington: US President Joe Biden said Wednesday an invasion of Ukraine would not be “a cakewalk” for Russia, in reference to tough sanctions Moscow would face from Washington and its allies.
Militarily, Russia has an “overwhelming superiority” over Ukraine, Biden said. But if Moscow invades “they’ll pay a stiff price.
Immediately.” He said Russia would face these consequences in the short term, medium term and long term. Biden said he suspected Russian soldiers would enter Ukraine but did not believe Putin was seeking “full-blown war.” “It’s one thing if it’s a minor incursion,” he said.
“But if they actually do what they’re capable of doing with the force amassed on the border, it is going to be a disaster for Russia if they further invade Ukraine.” Though Biden did not elaborate on what he considered a “minor incursion”, White House National Security Council spokeswoman Emily Horne said shortly after he was referring to “the difference between military and non-military/para-military/cyber action by the Russians.” (dpa)
