Minister of Culture HE Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Hamad Al Thani has affirmed that Doha International Book Fair is a great opportunity to promote the culture of reading and move towards knowledge and science.
In statements on the sidelines of the opening of the exhibition, he said this edition, despite being held in exceptional circumstances due to the coronavirus pandemic, is the largest so far in the history of the exhibition, with the participation of 430 exhibitors from 37 countries distributed over 845 pavilions. He pointed out that the exhibition, which is in its 50th year after its beginning in 1972, represents the cultural leadership of Qatar, and a continuation of its contribution to the dissemination of culture and knowledge.
He pointed out that the exhibition pavilions were designed in a unique creative way, as this edition witnessed a distinguished participation of Qatari publishing houses. The Ministry of Culture was keen to support and exempt them from the estimated financial cost of renting the pavilions, and from the cost of services provided by the exhibition halls, as well as the participation of a number of ministries, especially the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, the Ministry of Endowments, the Ministry of Municipality, and other institutions such as Qatar University, Qatar Museums, Qatar National Library, Al Jasra Cultural Center and others.
The United States of America is the honored guest of the exhibition, on the occasion of Qatar-America Year of Culture 2021. Regarding the American participation, Charge d’Affairs at the Embassy of the United States of America HE Natalie Baker, said that her country’s participation comes on the occasion of the Qatar-America Year of Culture 2021, coinciding with the two countries’ celebration of the 50th anniversary of bilateral relations. page 12
