French politicians, soldiers and police officers all paid tribute to a soldier who was killed in Mali on Saturday.
The soldier was killed on Friday morning during an anti-terrorism operation in Mali, the Elysee Palace said later the same day. The French army said the sniper was killed near Gossi, on the border with Burkina Faso. He had received several awards for his missions in the Sahel, the army added.
He had been reconnoitring an area when he was fatally wounded by a sniper, who was shot and killed by the French soldier, the army said.
The soldier had been given the highest award for riflemen and non-commissioned officers by President Emmanuel Macron in June.
Macron reiterated France’s determination to fight terrorism in comments on Friday. A total of 52 French soldiers have died fighting Islamist militias in the Sahel since 2013.
