Former Chadian dictator Hissene Habre has died at the age of 79, according to a minister in Senegal on Tuesday.
Habre, who was convicted of crimes against humanity, died in Dakar, Senegal’s Justice Minister Malick Sall said.
Habre was admitted to a hospital in Dakar a day earlier suffering from Covid-19.
Habre was sentenced to life in prison in mid-2016 by a special African tribunal for crimes against humanity, war crimes, torture, murder and forced prostitution. He was ordered to make compensation payments worth 93 million dollars.
He has been held in Cap Manual prison in Dakar since then. The verdict against Habre was described as a milestone in international justice by activists.
Habre led a totalitarian regime in Chad from 1982 to 1990 and is said to be responsible for the deaths of some 40,000 people, while 200,000 people were said to have been tortured.
After 22 years in exile in Senegal, Habre was arrested in Dakar in July 2013.
