Showing robustness of Qatar’s maritime sector, Qatar Ports Management Company (MwaniQatar) ports received 298 vessels in July 2021, an increase of 8 percent compared to the same period last year.
Hamad Port, Ruwais Port and Doha Port handled 121,739 TEUs containers in July, Mwani Qatar said in a tweet on Sunday. The ports handled 64,888 tonnes of general cargo.
The lifting of the COVID-19-related restrictions augured well for the country’s maritime sector as Qatar’s merchandise trade has been showing resilience.
The ports handled 37,126 livestock heads in July this year, registering a growth of around 28 percent compared to the same month last year, said Mwani Qatar in the tweet.
According to the tweet, MwaniQatar ports received 5,519 units of vehicles (RORO units) in July this year, a growth of 59 percent compared to the same month of last year.
The ports handled 34,929 tonnes of building material in July this year, showing a growth of 27 percent over the same period last year.
The impressive monthly performance by the maritime sector follows all-round performance shown by the ports in the first half of this year.
MwaniQatar ports handled 819,253 TEUs in the first half of 2021, an increase of 22 percent over the same period in 2020, supported by an 86 percent increase in transhipment through Hamad Port, confirming the port’s position as an important transhipment hub in the region.
Hamad Port’s strategic geographical location offers opportunities to create cargo movement towards the upper Gulf, supporting countries such as Kuwait and Iraq, and south towards Oman.
Hamad Port is helping in diversifying the country’s economy. Along with general cargo traffic, the port handles a variety of specialist imports including livestock, automobiles, and bulk grain.
While Hamad Port has become Qatar’s gateway to world trade, Ruwais Port is also playing a vital role in stimulating the country’s economy.
The port has cemented its position as the alternate gateway for the country’s maritime trade. The port has become one of the most important ports to meet the increasing needs of the domestic market of foodstuff, meat and fresh and chilled products.
