Qatar’s leading telecom brand Ooredoo on Monday announced that it has partnered with Quest, the first and largest Qatari company specialising in the business of eSports, to launch its own eSports brand named Ooredoo Nation - Gamers’ Land.
Aimed at tapping the rapidly growing eSports market in Qatar and the region, Ooredoo also announced signing of key new agreements with Quest that will enable it to establish a significant presence throughout the MENA region.
As part of the agreements, Ooredoo will be launching a series of products, services and initiatives specifically geared towards the gaming audience.
Plans include a series of eSports tournaments, through which Ooredoo will identify the best talent in the country and the MENA region to form an Ooredoo eSports team that will represent Ooredoo in regional and global eSports events.
With the signing of these agreements, Ooredoo is also planning to host several global tournaments that will see participation from many international teams along with the Ooredoo eSports team.
Addressing a press conference on the occasion, Ooredoo CEO Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulla Al Thani said, “The eSports market now constitutes a multi-billion-dollar industry of global significance. Its emergence has led industry analysts to identify eSports as both a key economic trend in markets for data and as a future driver of strategy in the telecommunications business.”
By positioning itself as the go-to brand for this youthful, data-intensive, high-revenue activity, Sheikh Mohammed said, Ooredoo aims to establish leadership in the eSports domain and build the activity into an important revenue stream.
Talking to Qatar Tribune on the sidelines of the event, Quest Chief Executive Officer Elie Honain said, “Qatar’s eSports market is growing at a fast pace. With this kind of agreement where serious brands like Ooredoo are involved, the market will continue to grow. This is the first and the biggest eSports agreement in the region where a leading telecom brand is participating.”
