The Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE) on Saturday launched the activities of the Virtual Education Forum 2021 under the theme of “Visions and Aspirations…Beyond Challenges.”
The event brought together education experts and professionals from all over the world to explore the future of optimal educational life and present various visions and aspirations for human development. It further sought to promote the educational outcomes, labor market requirements and sustainable development as top priorities.
The online forum offered platform for 41 highly-professional educational speakers from inside and outside Qatar to share their expertise through over 30 training sessions aimed at education enthusiasts.
The forum focused on five main themes, which included the integrating the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) into school curricula, and fostering community partnerships towards achieving sustainable development.
In his opening speech, Minister of Education and Higher Education HE Dr Mohammed Abdul Wahed Al Hammadi, said, “The ministry’s organisation of this annual event, though virtually this year, is driven by our firm belief in the importance of offering our students new opportunities to continue their education using modern technologies.”
“Today, we hold this forum under the ongoing pandemic in order to allow for sharing expertise, thoughts and experiences among participants. This aligns with the attention that Qatar devotes to scientific research and human development. Investing in human capacity is the way to ensure comprehensive and sustainable development.”
He said despite COVID-19 the ministry has made great achievements, most notably the follow-up of the educational process through alternative technological education, enabling students to follow up their educational attainment, conducting exams at all stages, and enrolling many of them in universities. He said although the pandemic prevented the implementation of some activities, it did not diminish the energy and determination of the students.
In her speech, HE Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, Vice Chairperson and CEO of Qatar Foundation, said: “Through education, we can instill the sense of citizenship in individuals and empower them to find their calling.”
She added, “Leadership is not a position. It is a choice. The real role of leadership in education is to create a ‘Climate of Possibility.’ When we choose to lead, we realize our role is to change ourselves. Only then we succeed in our mission.”
In turn, Dr Hassan bin Rashid Al Derham, President of Qatar University, said, “The convening of the Virtual Education Forum comes as a continuation of previous efforts since the start of the pandemic / to support the educational process in Qatar with all its components, including curriculum, teaching methods, evaluation, teachers, students and parents.”
The President of Qatar University linked the title of the forum to the effects of the pandemic, saying, “It is clear that it influenced the selection of the conference title, its themes and the topics of its sessions to shed light on the apparent change in methods and strategies of teaching and learning, and calling for a review of everything provided by educational institutions in Qatar and the world.”
He pointed out that the world today is witnessing transformations that have not been known before in the movement of information flow, the increase in technological innovations, and economic ambitions, indicating that this may be what prompted humanity to move towards a new society termed as a “knowledge society”, which is the existing society.
He emphasized that knowledge has become the main resource for wealth and added value and the decisive factor in decision-making mechanisms.
