DOHA
Minister of Education and Higher Education HE Dr Mohammad bin Abdul Wahed Al Hammadi and Ethiopian Ambassador to Qatar HE Ambassador Samia Zekaria inaugurated the Ethiopian Community International School-Doha (ECIS) on Monday.
The inauguration ceremony was also attended by CEO of Qatar Charity Yousef bin Ahmed Al Kuwari and Acting Director of African Affairs Department HE Ambassador Abdulrahman bin Mohammed Al Dosari among other officials.
The 1,570-sq metres premises is located in Al Shahaniya in a facility gifted by the Amir His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
The school has been established to create a favourable, affordable and cultural-oriented learning environment for Ethiopian children in Qatar. Many Ethiopians in Qatar have had to send their children back home for studies in the absence of affordable school offering Ethiopian curriculum.
Ambassador Zekaria said more than 20,000 nationals are working and living in Qatar.
She said, “Since the news of the establishment of the Ethiopian school in Doha two years ago, our citizens have been eagerly waiting for its opening. The school will be a big relief to many. I am delighted that the opening represents a tangible contribution to the community in stabilising family life.”
The envoy thanked HH the Amir, organisations and people who have supported the establishment of the school.
“We are indebted to HH the Amir for his instant response to the quest of our community and thereby the gracious gift of this premise during the visit of our former Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn to Doha in December 2017. This grant is one of the tangible proofs of the strong bilateral ties between the two countries,” said the ambassador.
The facility was renovated by the ministry of education, furnished by the Ministry of Endowments (Awqaf) and Islamic Affairs while Qatar Charity, Qatar International Islamic Bank and Al Sulaiteen Group donated finance to run and also furnish the facility.
The school will provide international quality education to Ethiopian girls and boys from kindergarten to secondary level, while the students will learn their local language and culture alongside international languages and courses.
The school boasts a dedicated laboratory, IT centre, library, sports facilities such as basketball, handball and tennis courts, and a well-furnished children playground.
