Qatar’s largest pop-culture event Geekdom returns to the 8th Ajyal Film Festival with fantastic online and in-person events. Presented by the Doha Film Institute (DFI) in partnership with Qatar National Tourism Council, the event will feature controller-crunching video game tournaments, an online version of the fan-favourite cosplay competition and special film screenings as part of the lively Ajyal Creativity Hub.
‘Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna’ (Japan/2020) by Tomohisa Taguchi in which Tai and Agumon are forced to risk everything in their epic final adventure will screen at 8.30pm on Saturday, November 21, at VOX Cinemas, Doha Festival City. At 7pm on Sunday, November 22, audiences at Ajyal Drive-in Cinema in Lusail will be treated to the MENA premiere of ‘Lupin III: The First’ (Japan/2020) by Takashi Yamazaki, which follows the ‘gentleman thief’ and his colourful underworld companions as they race to uncover the secrets of the mysterious Bresson Diary before it falls into the hands of a dark cabal. Both films will also be available online from November 19 to 23.
The Geekdom Tournaments sponsored by Qatar Gaming Community, a multi-videogame showdown that brings gaming communities and enthusiasts together in friendly competition, will take place online from November 12 to 16. The winners of the online tournament come together for an in-person face off in Building 19 Katara from November 19.
In another exciting new addition, Geekdom loyalists will be able to connect virtually to participate in all activities via live stream from November 19 to 23 between 5pm and 8pm every day, including talks with local talent and parts of the gaming tournaments.
The Ajyal Tunes concert series invites audiences to explore the mesmerising power of melody at the Ajyal Drive-In Cinema in Lusail. ‘Tunes Concert 1 (Feel the Beat)’ explores the duality of music’s energy-giving and relaxing properties, taking place at 9.30pm on Friday, November 20. ‘Ajyal Tunes Concert 2 (Music of the Heart)’, taking place at 9.30pm on Saturday, November21, examines emotional expression through music. ‘Ajyal Tunes Concert 3 (Geekdom Closing Concert)’ at 9 PM on Monday, November 23, caps off the series with a special Geekdom concert that will delight the anime and cartoon fan in all of us. All concerts are priced at QR50 per car at Lusail.
