Tehran Iran on Monday reported over 160 Covid-19-related deaths in 24 hours, a record number and one that has led to serious concern in the Health Ministry.
The death toll has now risen to 10,670, with 225,205 infections recorded, Health Ministry spokesperson Sima Lari said on Monday on state TV.
Experts say the new rise in cases is down to the recent relaxation of restrictions, instigated by the government after a fall in cases at the end of May, which saw nearly all employment sectors given the green light.
The relaxation meant that people were less careful, the Health Ministry said, adding that only 10 per cent of Iran’s 82 million people were taking hygiene measures seriously.
Now President Hassan Rowhani wants to introduce compulsory mask-wearing on public transport and in covered areas where large gatherings take place. But experts doubt that these measures will be followed by the public, particularly because there will be neither specific monitoring nor fines for non-compliance. (DPA)
