Qatar’s producer price index (PPI) for May 2020 is estimated at 34.2 points showing a decrease of 4.7 percent, when compared to the previous month (April 2020), according to data issued by Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA) on Monday.
On year-on-year [Y-o-Y] basis, PPI of May 2020 showed a decrease of 46.2 percent when compared to the PPI of May 2019. The PPI covers goods relating to mining (weight: 72.7 percent), “manufacturing” (26.8 percent), and “electricity & water” (0.5 percent).
Mining
The PPI of mining showed a decrease of 7.1 percent in May 2020 compared with the PPI of April 2020, primarily due to the fall in prices of “crude petroleum and natural gas” by 6.8 percent.
Meanwhile, PPI of May 2020, when compared with its counterpart in previous year (May 2019), a decrease of 53.5 percent was noticed.
Manufacturing
A decrease of 1.5 percent has been recorded in May 2020, when compared with the previous month’s manufacturing index (April 2020). The drop in prices was observed in the following groups: “refined petroleum products” by 4.3 percent, “rubber and plastics products” 3 percent, “grain mill and other products” 0.8 percent, “other chemical products and fibers” 0.4 percent.
However, the increasing prices were noticed in “basic metals” by 3.5 percent, “cement and other non-metallic products” 1.3 percent, “dairy products” and “basic chemicals” 1.1 percent each, and “beverages” 0.4 percent, The groups “juices”, and “paper and paper products” remained unchanged.
Comparing with the index of counterpart in the previous year (May 2019), “manufacturing” PPI of May 2020 showed a decrease of 32 percent.
The major groups which explain the price fall are: “refined petroleum products” by 42.4 percent, “basic chemicals” 22.3 percent, “rubber and plastics products” 8.9 percent, “basic metals” by 3.8 percent, “other chemical products and fibers” 1.9 percent, and “beverages” by 1.2 percent. However, prices increased in “paper and paper products” by 3 percent, “juices” 2.6 percent, “dairy products” 1.5 percent, “grain mill and other products” 0.3 percent, and “cement and other non-metallic products” by 0.1 percent.
Electricity and water
The PPI of this group showed a decrease of 0.7 percent compared to April 2020, resulting from the decrease in “electricity” prices by 6.7 percent, and increase in “water” prices by 7.7 percent. On Y-o-Y basis, the PPI of this group showed a decrease of 8.6 percent, affected by drop in “electricity” prices by 10 percent, and “water” by
6.9 percent.
