The German Cup final has been rescheduled for July 4, after the completion of the Bundesliga season, the German Football Federation (DFB) said on Monday.
The DFB also set the semi-finals for June 9 and 10 at a board meeting. Holders Bayern Munich are to play Eintracht Frankfurt and fourth-tier Saarbruecken take on Bayer Leverkusern.
The semis were originally scheduled for late April and the Berlin final for May 23, but then the games were postponed indefinitely because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Monday’s decision comes after the German Football League (DFL) last week got permission from state authorities to restart the Bundesliga and second division. Action will resume on Saturday and the leagues are to end in late June.
The DFB still requires this final approval that it can complete its events as well. They include the men’s third division from May 26 and the women’s Bundesliga from May 29, also agreed upon on Monday.
The DFB safety and hygiene concept is similar to that of the DFL, and all games will take place behind closed doors.
“I am very confident that we will also get the permission from the political side in a timely manner to continue the third division, the women’s Bundesliga and of course the DFB Cup,” DFB president Fritz Keller said.
“Our plans are in full swing so that we can finish the cup season properly on the pitch,” he added, naming the games behind closed doors “the best variant” under the circumstances.
While the cup has just three more matches to play and the women’s Bundesliga six rounds, the third tier has 11 rounds left the DFB hopes to complete before the end of June with five midweek rounds.
However, the clubs are split on whether to resume the season, there is opposition against the possible use of neutral venues, and several clubs have said they can’t implement the hygiene concept.
In addition, third-division side Carl-Zeiss Jena is not even allowed to resume team training until at least May 25 - the day before the restart - by city authorities, the Ostthueringer Zeitung reported.
Former Bundesliga club Waldhof Mannheim has called for another vote among the 20 clubs whether to continue the season. In a first vote in late April 10 of the 20 clubs voted to play on, if permitted.
