HAMAD Medical Corporation (HMC), in collaboration with the Qatar Sports for All Federation (QSAF), the Ministry of Culture and Sports, and Qatar Museums Authority, organised an outdoor event at the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) Park recently, as part of a wider campaign to promote healthy ageing among the adult population living in Qatar.
The event motto, ‘Be Active for Healthy Ageing’ promotes the importance of adopting a healthier lifestyle in one’s younger years as a strategy to help prevent or reduce the risks associated with some of the chronic diseases that are more prevalent in older age.
As part of the event, a group of healthcare professionals, including geriatricians, nurses, dietitians and occupational health and physical health specialists, will offer simple assessments and advice to visitors. Fun and informative activities, including a Tai Chi session, are also planned.
Dr Hanadi Khamis al Hamad, National Health Strategy 2018-2022 lead for healthy ageing, says that research shows people who adopt a healthy lifestyle earlier in life stay healthier as they age.
“There are many benefits to staying active and healthy from middle to older age, such as better overall well-being, an increased ability to recover more quickly from illness, and reduced risk of frailty, falls and chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. Staying physically active, eating more nutritious foods and socialising with others and thereby staying connected with the world around you, can help keep the mind engaged and can help people live healthier, more active, and often happier lives as they age”, said DrHamad.
“We are delighted to be collaborating with the Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Qatar Sports for All Federation, and also grateful to Qatar Museums for hosting this event in their beautiful park. We can only engage with the community by offering such events that are readily accessible to members of the community”, added Dr Hamad.
