The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) on Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with United Development Company (UDC) to implement the Workplace Wellness Programme.
The move comes as part of the ongoing efforts of the ministry to promote health awareness in society and encourage people to adopt a healthy lifestyle in line with Qatar Vision 2030 and to achieve the goals of the National Health Strategy 2018-2022.
The MoU was signed by Acting Manager of Health Promotion Department at the ministry Dr Salah Abdulla al Yafei and Executive Director of Human Capital at UDC Nasser al Harmi.
Dr Yafei said the MoU with UDC aims at promoting healthy lifestyle and improving the health of employees in different sectors, adding that it also seeks to reduce prevalence of non-communicable diseases.
For his part, Nasser al Harmi said the UDC will work to provide safe and healthy work environment for workers.
Launched in 2014 by MoPH, the Workplace Wellness Programme aims at encouraging employees of governmental and semi-governmental institutions to adopt healthy lifestyles while providing them with a healthy and safe environment. It also promotes regular tests for obesity, blood pressure and blood sugar for early detection of chronic non-communicable diseases.
The programme is based on an integrated plan that includes needs assessment, a comprehensive follow-up action plan in collaboration with the participating organisation, the implementation of the activities, and ongoing monitoring and a follow-up evaluation.
The focus of the programme is on how to prevent chronic non-communicable diseases. This is achieved by focusing on healthy nutrition, physical activity in the work environment and outside. The programme also addresses cessation of tobacco consumption, alongside increasing the awareness of how to overcome daily stress.
Additionally, the programme brings numerous benefits to employees by enhancing the work environment, raising staff confidence and morale, reducing work pressure, increasing job satisfaction, increasing health protection skills.
