His Highness the Amir of the State of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani patronised the inauguration ceremony of Ras Laffan and Mesaieed solar power plants in Ras Laffan City on Monday.
During the ceremony, HH the Amir watched a documentary film on the construction stages of the two plants and their objectives in supporting the country’s strategy to transition to low-carbon energy and promote environmental sustainability in accordance with Qatar National Vision 2030.
HH the Amir also watched a theatrical performance on the ancient uses of solar energy in agriculture and industry.
Following the inauguration, HH the Amir inspected the solar panel control and distribution room, which features the latest technologies used in generating electricity from solar energy, the two plants’ utility services, and their production capacity to meet a significant portion of the country’s renewable energy needs.
HH the Amir affirmed that the inauguration of two strategic solar power projects in Ras Laffan and Mesaieed comes within the framework of the country’s plans to transition to renewable energy, diversify energy sources, and support strategic development projects.
In a post on his official account on X, HH the Amir said, “As part of our plans to transition to renewable energy, I inaugurated two strategic solar energy projects today in Ras Laffan and Mesaieed. These two plants aim to diversify energy resources, support our country’s strategic development projects, and leverage the potential of low-carbon energy in our sustainability plans and reduce environmental impacts.”
The Ras Laffan and Mesaieed solar power plants have a combined capacity of 875 megawatts, which will more than double Qatar’s solar energy production to 1,675 MW of renewable energy.At the beginning of the ceremony, Minister of State for Energy Affairs, President and CEO of QatarEnergy HE Eng. Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi delivered a speech on this occasion.
