US: Sponsors of a UN Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire in Syria’s war-torn Idlib province urged Russia Thursday not to veto the "purely humanitarian” measure. Speaking before a UN Security Council meeting on Syria, ambassadors of sponsors Belgium, Kuwait and Germany warned that the conflict could become the century’s worst humanitarian crisis if the fighting persisted. "The Council cannot, must not, let that happen,” they said. The resolution, which was to be put to a vote in the Security Council later in the day, says "all parties shall immediately cease hostilities to avoid a further deterioration of the already catastrophic humanitarian situation in Idlib Governorate, beginning at noon Damascus time on 21 September 2019.” (AFP)
