The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) observed Earth Hour on Saturday by turning off the lights in the ministry’s main building (Al Adeed Tower) and all its affiliated buildings for one hour.
The ministry reported that marking this event is part of its commitment to upholding environmental responsibility, along with its active role in enhancing the community’s awareness of the significance of rationalising energy consumption, contributing to reducing detrimental carbon emissions, and encouraging community members to pursue sustainable practices that contribute to conserving the environment.
To mark this event, Director of the MoECC’s Green Development and Environmental Sustainability Engineer Abdullah Jumaa Al Muraikhi highlighted that Earth Hour is one of the most significant global environmental initiatives held annually with the objective of reinforcing awareness of the importance of combating environmental challenges, in addition to protecting the Earth’s natural resources.
He pointed out that the ministry continues to implement environmental programmes and initiatives that contribute to achieving environmental sustainability and strengthening national and global efforts to preserve the environment for generations to come.
The event was intended to emphasise that everyone is part of a single ecosystem, affected by their actions, with studies revealing that this event has helped reduce the average electricity consumption in some countries by four percent over six years.
