Qatar is a major donor to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), said UNRWA Commissioner-General Pierre Krahenbuhl.
At a press conference on the sidelines of the agency’s advisory committee in Jordan, Krahenbuhl said the UN agency faced a very difficult financial crisis last year due to the decision of the US administration to stop its financial support to the agency, and accordingly, UNRWA suffered a financial deficit of $446 million.
Krahenbuhl said UNRWA had secured some $50 million from the $1.2 billion budget for 2019 and expected a deficit of $211 million this year, calling on donor countries to accelerate the disbursement of pledges. Krahenbuhl said UNRWA needs to continue providing educational services to 700 schools, benefiting half a million students, and medical services in clinics visited by 8.5 million people a year.
