Former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy and Industry of Qatar HE Abdullah bin Hamad al Attiyah recently visited the Qatar Center for Organ Donation (Hiba) at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) to attend a special event organised by the centre to celebrate his return from medical treatment abroad.
Dr Riadh AbdulSattar Fadhil, director of the centre, welcomed Attiyah to the centre and expressed his gratitude for the great trust he placed in the team.
The centre was able to successfully provide lungs for His Excellency from a deceased donor in Doha and transfer them to London in a record time for a lung transplant operation.
The transport is believed to be one of the longest involving an organ for transplantation. While Qatar has a successful and world recognised organ donation programme, it currently does not undertake lung transplants.
“The centre had the honour to provide its services to one of the leaders who has dedicated his life to laying the foundation for sustainability and progress in the State of Qatar,” Dr Fadhil said. “We pray to God to grant him long life and good health to continue in his role in the development of Qatar.”
Attiyah expressed his sincere thanks and gratitude to Minister of Public Health HE Dr Hanan Mohammed al Kuwari for the careful follow-up at all stages of treatment abroad and at home in Qatar. He also thanked the clinicians, nurses, paramedics and support staff at the HMC for providing the best health services to citizens and residents alike.
Attiyah stressed the importance of organ donation in saving lives of many patients with organ failure and added that donating organs is a noble humanitarian work that will be rewarded in heaven as the best deed rather than burying organs under the ground.
At the ceremony, Dr Fadhil presented a memento to Attiyah to thank him for his support and wished him good health and long life.
The event coincided with the launch of HMC’s annual Ramadan Organ Donation Campaign.
